Classes

English I-available as an Honor 1 credit // Grades 8-9

Introduces high school students to literary analysis and critical thinking. Students read a range of texts, including novels, short stories, and plays, and learn to write analytical essays and research papers. Required reading for this course includes The Miracle Worker and Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea

English II-available as an Honor 1 credit // Grades 9-10

Focuses on world literature, exposing students to diverse cultures and perspectives. Students analyze literary techniques and themes, and continue to develop their writing skills through essays and projects. Among short stories and works of poetry, other required reading during the course includes: To Kill a Mockingbird and Doctor Faustus.

English III-available as an Honor 1 credit // Grades 10-11

Centers on American literature, exploring historical and cultural contexts. Students engage with classic and contemporary works, enhancing their analytical skills and writing proficiency through various assignments. Among nonfiction and works of poetry, other required reading for the course includes: Our Town and The Scarlet Letter

English IV-available as an Honor 1 credit // Grades 11-12

Concentrates on British literature, covering significant works from different periods. Students refine their critical thinking and writing abilities, preparing for college-level English courses through in-depth analyses and research projects.Through the use of modern British magazines and newspaper articles, students will look at how the language is used today, including the media and digital communication. Required reading for this course includes Hamlet, The Nun’s Priest’s Tale, and the Bible.

Creative Writing 0.5 Credit // Grades 10-12 Pre-requisite: English I

Creative Writing introduces students to the foundational aspects of creative writing. The overarching goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, tools, and skills necessary to develop a plan for writing and then produce works of nonfiction, fiction and poetry. This course covers developing a writing plan and writing techniques that will be used as students write a personal memoir, a short story, and poetry. While students are learning about techniques and methods of creative writing, they will read a nonfiction and a fiction work either chosen from a list or approved by their teacher

American Literature 0.5 Credit // Grades 10-12 Pre-requisite: English I

Students explore the history, culture, and the passion of America through this interactive literature course that features the writings of key colonial figures, romantic poets, the naturalists, and writers from the modern and postmodern age. Students will examine not only the genres but the movements that fueled literature in America
